If you have purchased Trados and have not had time to read the official manual or if you have already tried to use it but without much success, this article will save you time, offering you a brief overview to help you understand how to make the most of this tool.

But let’s start from the beginning: what is Trados and what can it do for you?

What is Trados

Trados is a program that offers a complete suite of applications for editing, evaluating and managing translation projects both at work and on the go. It is probably the most used computer-aided translation tool today.

Trados is the name used for a package of applications including Translator Workbench, MultiTerm, TagEditor, S-Taggers, TermExtract, T-Windows, plus a set of filters for specific DTP programs. In this article, however, we will only focus on Translator’s Workbench, TagEditor, and MultiTerm. In fact, these programs are sufficient to manage 99% of the translations you will receive.

Set up your workbench with Translator’s Workbench

The simple yet powerful Translator’s Workbench is designed to help translators work efficiently on various types of content.

To ensure that the work environment runs smoothly on your computer, you should use the latest version of Google Chrome, Firefox or Safari.

Follow these simple steps to start working on a translation:

  • You open Translator’s Workbench;
  • Save the translation memory by selecting a source language (the one you want to translate) and then in another grid; choose the language you want to translate the text into;
  • Save both in File, creating a new folder called TM;
  • Saves language memory by writing the initials of both languages;
  • Then choose the text and click “Open/Get” in the bar above.
  • Two colors will be displayed, blue and yellow. Copy the blue text that will be your original text and paste it into the yellow area where it will be translated;
  • Click on “Set/Close” if you want to save the translated text. Otherwise, the translation memory will also be lost.

Manage files with TagEditor

Maintain your vocabulary with Multiterm

Multiterm is another highly relevant application, responsible for the terminology in the translation processes carried out in Trados Studio.

With MultiTerm you can store and manage multilingual terminology. Anyone who has access to the platform and is working on a specific project can contribute to the creation and enrichment of the terminology databases. This ensures high quality and consistency of content from the original to the translation.

MultiTerm supports a wide variety of file formats, allowing you to automatically convert and import existing terminology resources into it, effectively bypassing the hassle of manually adding terms. It is a tool that therefore allows highly flexible management of any corporate terminology project to guarantee consistency and accuracy of the service.
